For textiles, we especially favor organic, plant-dyed fabrics, rather than synthetic dyes and finishes. 78% of everything we recommend is made entirely from natural ingredients or materials. That figure runs lower because it includes durable goods like water filters.

We favor natural ingredients over the "generally recognized as safe" (GRAS) standard because GRAS allows a company to decide on its own that an additive is safe and bring it to market without FDA review, and in many cases without even notifying the FDA. "Recognized as safe" often means recognized by the manufacturer, not verified by a regulator.

We surface recognized third-party certifications and safety listings, like GOTS, USDA Organic, MADE SAFE, OEKO-TEX, Energy Star, and more. 60% of our picks carry at least one.

A business having no certification is never a mark against a pick. Many growing brands follow genuinely ethical supply-chain practices and source natural, organic ingredients, but the cost of formal certification doesn't make sense against the overhead.
