Hi there! My name is Renee, and I am the founder of Roots ‘n' Fruits. The story of why I started my blog begins when I graduated college. I believe learning is a lifelong journey and doesn't end when we graduate from an education institution. After I graduated college from the University of Georgia with a bachelors in Management Information Systems, I knew that I wanted to delve deeper into my creative interests outside of work.
I have always been someone who eats relatively healthy and has an interest in learning more about how the properties of different plants can be used to benefit human health. I think western medicine has it's purpose, and each person should make their own decisions about managing their health with support from a doctor. I prefer to regularly support my health through recipes made with whole foods and natural remedies. We know not all plants are safe for human consumption, but for the plants that are safe, it amazes me the abundance of nutrients and health benefits offered.
As I started to mature in my early 20s, I began to notice a non-toxic community on social media. There are doctors, researchers and influencers teaching about toxins allowed in conventional products. I grew up believing if a product was allowed to be sold in a store then it must be safe for people because of regulations. As I was learning from this community and reading research, I realized that many conventional products contain a legal threshold of toxic ingredients linked to potential health issues.
While the threshold of toxins in conventional products might be low for a single product, I realized that recurring purchases meant consistent exposure to toxins. I also started to think about how industries typically do not create with the mindset of using the healthiest ingredients and materials due to costs. Instead, industries strive to make their products as cheap as possible, comply with regulations and sell at high profit margins. In result of this, we see a plethora of products made from plastic materials.
I wasn't always an anti-plastic person. But as I was diving deeper into reading health research, I learned that plastic packaging leaches microplastics and unknown synthetic chemicals into the product contents even at room temperature. The research we do have available does indicate that plastic and chemical additives leach more when exposed to higher temperatures.
That's why I started to view the world around me differently. I looked at my “paper cup” of coffee different after learning this. I realized there are so many machines and packaging that are made with plastic materials and handle hot contents. Take for example the “paper plate” lined with plastic, if you place on that “paper plate” hot food from the oven then invisible microplastics and unknown synthetic chemicals will be released into that food and eaten.
As I was realizing how often we consume microplastics and expose ourselves to toxins, I noticed the people around me were living life as normal without this understanding. That's when I knew I needed to start a blog to discuss what is invisible to the naked eye but has a direct impact on our health.
I am not a doctor or a medical professional, and all of the content in my blog is not medical advice and only for informational purposes. I am a conscious consumer who seeks to mindfully live their life and help others to do the same.
Roots ‘n' Fruits is my creative outlet to explore 100% natural, plastic-free living through the lens on photograph and videography. My goal is to help conscious consumers be rooted in purity and fruiting peace of mind for the life they are living.
