Synthetic fabrics such as polyester, nylon, acrylic, and spandex are made from petroleum-based plastics, and thousands of different chemicals can legally be used in production. Some of the most concerning include PFAS, flame retardants, azo dyes, nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs), heavy metals, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and phthalates. These substances can be absorbed through the skin, our body’s largest organ, and are linked to cancer, hormone disruption, reproductive harm, and neurological issues.
